Irregular Bleeding Q & A

What in-office procedures are available to control irregular bleeding?

Patients who experience irregular bleeding may be able to undergo in-office surgery or minimally invasive procedures to help regulate or control the problem. Dr. Roberts utilizes NovaSure® for all his minimally invasive procedures related to controlling irregular bleeding.

NovaSure is a form of endometrial ablation that uses state of the art laser technology to gently remove the lining of the uterus. No incisions are made and no stitches are needed. As an in-office procedure, it requires less than 10 minutes to complete and has an extremely short recovery time.

This type of treatment is ideal for patients who don’t want to undergo a hysterectomy or other type of surgical procedure. It’s also perfect for women who don’t want to deal with hormone replacement therapy, since NovaSure doesn’t involve that.

What is endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a procedure in which the lining of the uterus is removed. In the past, when a patient suffered irregular bleeding or problems with their periods, the primary course of action was a full or partial hysterectomy. That often resulted in the need for hormone replacement therapy and a lengthy recovery time.

With today's advancements in laser technology, Dr. Roberts can perform an endometrial ablation procedure quickly and easily in his office. The procedure is minimally invasive and involves using a laser that gently removes the lining from the inside of the uterus. The patient can then resume their day to day activities within a few hours of leaving his office.

What conditions have irregular bleeding as a symptom?

Irregular bleeding can have many causes; it’s often a symptom of other reproductive health problems. Women who have consistently heavy periods may have a hormonal imbalance that’s easily corrected with birth control or hormone replacement therapy. Other causes of irregular bleeding include:

  • endometriosis
  • miscarriage
  • uterine cysts
  • fibroid tumors
  • ovarian or uterine cancer
  • damage to the uterus caused by a previous pregnancy
  • pelvic inflammatory disease
  • sexually transmitted diseases

Dr. Roberts will conduct a thorough examination to determine the condition’s exact cause, come up with an accurate diagnosis, and create an effective treatment plan.
